Grigor Narekatsi is an Armenian poet of the mysterious and lyrical genre, a monk and theologian of the 10th century. He was born in the Armenian kingdom of Vaspurakan. His father is the author of the interpretation of the Holy Liturgy.
Grigor is recognized as one of the thirty-six “Doctors of the Church”. His main work, The Book of Lamentations, is called the Second Bible. It revealed the union of the spiritual and the intellectual in man. The book has been translated into many languages. This is one of the most beloved and famous works of Armenian literature. Consists of 10,000 lines and 95 chapters in the form of prayers.
The book contains Narekatsi’s discerning monologue, a confession directed to God. He speaks of the desire of every person to be perfect and the knowing of the impossibility of this. Thanks to Grigor Narekatsi, we understand that the Lord with love and mercy forgives the unworthiness of a person who has atoned for his sins.
